Travel light, freeze at night.

Post  Doc_Shane on Sun Jan 20, 2013 5:02 pm

In efforts to reduce weight and have multi-use items in my kit I have come back to the minimalist sleeping/shelter gear.

What I have-

GI poncho
Poncho liner
6 tent stakes
550 cord
Mylar blanket.

All of the above is rolled up in the poncho making a very small kit, it will keep you dry but not necessarily warm Very Happy

Can you post pictures? I have all of that minus tent stakes and am curious how it looks.

Btw as long as you have a poncho liner your living the life of luxury. It is funny almost every Marine I know when they are getting out they buy a poncho liner because we love them that much.

I seriously sleep with mine every night and that is in the rear!

Yes the poncho liner is the grown mans blanky, haha.

True story. Still have the first one I was ever issued and "lost" in the field.

Yes when I can move again, I will break out my gear and take pics.

here it is explained-

lay out poncho and liner together
fold in 1/2, then 1/2 again
put 550 cord and tent stakes at open end of poncho (not hood end)
roll tightly towards the hood end.

Tuck all into the hood, store in outside pocket of Alice pack or in butt pack.

Shows how gear has changed. You have the old school poncho. The ones we are issued now are really just tarps in Marpat. I bet I would rather have the old poncho anyways, might pick one up.
