I'll represent...

Post  Paladin on Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:08 am

I spent 20 years and 9 days in the USAF Security Forces (light infantry trained military policeman). I spent the first 8 years of my career working mostly aircraft and nuclear weapon security. At my 8 year point I did what the Air Force calls a "lateral-train" into the sub-specialty of Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM). Basically, a firearms instructor and small arms repairman. I spent nearly the rest of my career in CATM.

I managed to do deployment tours in UAE, Kuwait, Haiti, Iraq and Afghanistan. In Afghanistan I was, unfortunately, a Fobbit. Got screwed and assigned as S4. So, I spent 7 months there hanging out with all the douchebags. But, in Iraq I did convoy guntruck security missions as convoy commander (70th Medium Truck, 828th Trans Battalion). We did what are called "line-haul" long-range convoy missions escorting logistical convoys all over Iraq and Kuwait. I managed to log over 9000 miles on Iraqi highways during my tour. So, I've been outside the wire with Haji shooting at me and trying to blow me up.

I spent 5 years stationed at Nellis AFB, NV, 1 year at Osan AB, S. Korea, 2 years at Fairchild AFB, WA, 4 years at Malmstrom AFB, MT, 3 years at Elmendorf AFB, AK, and the remainder of my career at Mountain Home AFB, ID.

I never did understand why the USAF labelled their MPs as security forces? But I guess it makes sense just due to their job assignments. The USMC has a special B billet for these duties like nuclear weapons guards and such, called just that, security forces. I would love to toot my own horn as with ya here, but I am not one to indulge in many of my military (for lack of a better term) exploits. We should get together sometime and shoot the **** though. I bet that both you and I would get a laugh out of each others experiences.

Yeah, the Air Force has to be different than the sister services. I usually just tell people I was an MP in the Air Force rather than get into the whole "well, in the Air Force they call it..." crap.

Thinking on that subject though I was down on Lackland AFB for a few weeks and have to admit though, that the Air Forces "Special Forces" are allot better field trained than the USMC MPs. I am talking out of school of course.

Cool, you've been to Lackland! Yeah, Navy and USMC MPs train there as well, but their courses are a bit different than ours. They are not normally integrated among sister-services.

Well, I sure wouldn't call us "Special Forces"! We're just the "Security Forces". We're known in the Air Force as "Defenders". We do go through the Security Forces version of AIT (called Ground Combat Skills Level 1 (and Lvl 2 as an NCO, and Lvl 3 as SNCO or officer) as part of our training. We do occasionally send folks through Ranger, Air Assault and Airborne schools, but they are pretty tough to get a slot to, so most Defenders don't get a chance to go. Basically, we're just light infantry trained MPs. We get trained on everything from the Mk19 and M2 on down. All of our team tactics and recon and combat patrolling is stolen straight from the Army's FM 7-8.

The reason for our additional combat training that makes us a bit different than other branches MPs is because in Vietnam airbases were big targets for the NVA and VC. The Army and Marines were obviously tasked with more important missions in Vietnam so they were not able to defend our airbases. We had to defend them ourselves. So, the Air Force started Operation Safe-Side, which involved sending Security Policemen through Ranger school and then assigning them to "Combat Security Police" units in Vietnam. It was a huge success and has continued ever since, except we have our own school now at Lackland and at Camp Bullis, TX.

We're one of the few Air Force careers that see's time outside the wire, mostly doing guntruck convoy escorts, and recon and combat patrols in the SAM/mortar/rocket footprint around airfields.

Most of the Air Force is a bunch of douchebags that think the military is a 9 to 5 job, but we're not among them. Security Forces is more Army than Air Force...

They actually pulled the MP school out of there and now I think they are in Fort Leonardwood? If my memory serves me correctly i think only specialty schools are there now for the USMC, I think Brig guards and MWD handlers go there. I was there on something a little different. LOL Those C-5s are big girls.

No kidding? It's been a little while since I've been down to Lackland, so I didn't know the Marines had left.

Yeah, the C5 is a beast. I flew on one to Port-au-Prince, Haiti from Nellis in Las Vegas. We got lucky and the plane broke-down at Hurlbert Field, in Ft Walton Beach, FL. And lodging on base was full, so we ended up spending almost a week at the Ramada on the beach! Life was good, but then the parts showed up for the plane... Crying or Very sad
